TAG Living Lab Opportunity

Are you interested in getting involved to make UBC a better place to learn?

We meet Thursdays 2:30-5:30 throughout the term, beginning January 21st. During these meetings, we create plays, learn about equity and diversity issues in the classroom, explore our own and other experiences, play games, rehearse and plan our performances.

We also have several performance opportunities during the term, and into the summer. **Students who are performing receive a stipend for performances** and we try to make sure everyone has an opportunity to perform through the semester. We perform primarily to UBC teaching audiences. Last term, we performed three times. This term, we have 3 performances set up already (one at a conference in Kamloops!), and we expect to have several more.

If you’re interested, send an email to yael[dot]harlap[at]ubc[dot]ca and let us know. Also, please pass this information on to your friends and classmates. We’re looking for undergrad and grad students from all walks of life!

Live Blogging: Student Leadership Conference 2010

The Peer Programs at UBC will be Live Blogging our experience at the event. Stay tuned to hear more!

The UBC Student Leadership Conference

Two days from now, UBC will host one of the largest one-day leadership conferences in Canada, the UBC Student Leadership Conference. Peer Programs will be one of many organizations getting involved in this very exciting event. With representatives attending as delegates, workshop presenters, and volunteers, Peer Programs’ members have realized the impact and importance of this conference. We are delighted to be a part of such an amazing event and are excited at the learning, development and networking we will do there!

The 2010 UBC Student Leadership Conference (SLC) Planning Committee is thrilled for this year’s conference, taking place on January 9th.   The Conference features Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire as our special keynote speaker, Shane Koyczan as our opening performer, over 70 workshops and 16 Featured Presenters.  More than 1100 delegates attend the one –day event, and the SLC attracts some of the greatest leaders on and off campus.  This year’s theme is “Think Change – Press Play” which elaborates on the SLC’s hope to not only be a source of inspiration for emerging and current leaders to think change, but to also be a platform of resources in order to help facilitate motion and action.

On behalf of the SLC, we look forward to seeing everyone out on Saturday!

Communications and Promotions Director

Showcased below are two of the workshops that Peer Programs’ members will be presenting.

SLC Workshop: More than Meets the Eye

Senior Leaders from the VPS Emerging Leaders Program are presenting a workshop on intercultural dialogue and the important relationship it has with our roles as leaders. Join us as we discover cultural differences and similarities, and learn to initiate this open dialogue.

Intercultural dialogue is an essential part of being a leader in this generation. We encourage our Emerging Leaders to be open to learning, and gaining new insights. Therefore this is an excellent opportunity for them to openly discuss their thoughts on intercultural communication.

SLC Workshop: Put Your Thinking Hats On! Improving Intercultural Communication through Leadership

One important aspect of leadership is to share what you know with others and provide them with the skills needed for effective leadership. After attending an inspiring Peer Programs Retreat in September, the International Peer Program and International Student Advisors decided to present this SLC workshop. The workshop is targeted at student leaders at UBC who work with students from a variety of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds to explore various communication styles and cultural differences.  This interactive workshop will focus on a problem-based learning approach applying Edward DeBono’s 6 Thinking Hats.
