I think the concept of “Why?” is something quite remarkable and something that people should try to think about no matter what they are doing. It can expand outside of leadership boundaries and become an everyday component in life because if you know why you are doing something, not only will you be able to lead, but you will know your own values more and understand your life’s purpose better. Very cool video!
I like his perspective of looking at the fundamental reasons why you do what you do, but I do think he’s being overly dramatic in his presentation. Some of his claims are a stretch; his Golden Circle is reflected in the structure of the brain? Please. I like the idea as a framework, but that’s about it. Ironically, I don’t think I bought into the Why of his presentation.
Such an interesting talk, I’m a fan of Apple. I probably would not line up for 6 hours or more for an iPhone or iPad, but I can relate to the notion of why buying from them just feels right.
I liked how Simon explains the ‘it doesn’t feel right’ feeling, I usually walk away from buying or doing something ‘just because’, I don’t necessarily always rationalize it or formulate out reasons for doing so.
Start with WHY!
After watching this video, I thought about how often I think about why I’m doing something before I do it. And I realized, that most of the time when I set goals for myself, I just think about the task I want to accomplish and not why I want to do it or what I will gain from it in the long-run. I think that focusing on the ‘why’ can be a huge motivator for me to accomplish goals that I set for myself.
I must say that as a science student, I was a quite skeptical about about his discussion of the brain as well.
This is really an amazing talk. It literally blew my mind…he summed up so many things that I felt was sort of in the back of my mind, but couldn’t exactly put into words. People don’t buy “what” you do, they buy “why” you do… It is true. As a key, when you believe in the cause, you feel like all the effort you put into it is for yourself – for your belief. It is same for involvement on campus – we have the belief that we want to make this school better, build communities and create connections with peers. That is why we do the things we do – we started with “why”. He also said, there are leaders and there are those who lead. People who are leaders hold power and authority, but those who lead hold beliefs, passion and ideas, they are the ones who inspire us. “We follow those who lead not because we have to, but because we WANT to.” Because we have the same belief. – these concepts really apply to anything and everything. I feel that to be a better “leader”, to better practice “leadership” is to show people “why” you believe in what you believe…
Lastly 🙂 I must say, he sounds super convincing….some public speaking skills! Must learn to speak with such conviction!!
