Peer Programs

Academic Success Coaches (ASC, Sauder)

ASC provides holistic academic peer coaching to Sauder students and is committed to creating a support system for first and second year Sauder students to help them succeed academically during their time at Sauder. They work closely with the Sauder Undergraduate Program Office and Commerce Undergraduate Society. The coaches operate, and the program is ran out of the Canaccord Learning Commons.

Alumni Ambassadors

UBC Alumni Ambassadors work as official representatives of alumniUBC and connect with alumni in communities across the Lower Mainland.  Ambassadors are leaders and role models on campus, who reconnect alumni with activity currently occurring at UBC’s Vancouver Campus and lead events aimed at providing students with an opportunity to interact with and learn from alumni.

Arts Peer Advisors (APA)

Arts Academic Advising supports the academic success of the faculty’s 11,608 BA, BFA and BIE students. Arts Peer Advisors are instrumental staff members in the programs and services provided by Arts Academic Advising. Arts Peer Advisors help guide fellow Arts students through the undergraduate program by providing informational advising through one-on-one interactions at the Front Desk of the Arts Advising Office and via e-mail.

Career Peer Coaches

Career Peer Coaches are integral members of the Centre for Student Involvement and Careers. The Career Peers coach fellow students on career development and how to navigate the world of career. They specialize in resume, cover letter, interview, and career exploration coaching and create a welcoming environment for students to seek career help on campus.

Community Learning Initiative Student Leaders

Student Leaders at the UBC Community Learning initiative work closely with staff, UBC students, and community partners to help plan and support community learning programs like Trek and Reading Week. The role builds leadership skills and gives student leaders the opportunity to work directly with off-campus community partners, expand their networks, and learn about complex issues facing community organizations like inner city schools and non-profits. Student leaders will provide peer leadership through tasks like liaising with community partners, training, facilitating reflection, and general peer support.

Emergency Medical Aid Team (EMAT)

The Emergency Medical Aid Team (EMAT) is a Wellness Outreach program within Student Health Services (SHS). EMAT provides first aid support to a wide range of on-campus events; the team also provides educational outreach on injury prevention, safer drinking practices, and disaster preparedness.

Equity Ambassadors

The Equity Ambassadors work toward creating an inclusive learning and working environment on campus. They promote respectful communities of difference by raising students’ awareness about equity and inclusiveness through workshops, discussion groups, information tables, articles, and events. Social justice and dedication to promoting human rights and inclusiveness for all students, staff, and faculty is the common goal for all Equity Ambassadors.

Jump Start

Jump Start is a first-year transition program for new international and Aboriginal students that begins with a two-week intensive immersion program in August, followed by a year-long transition program. Jump Start Student Leaders provide ongoing support and coaching to groups of 30 first-year students organized into Learning Communities based on faculty. Jump Start Student Leaders work as Academic Coaches throughout the year (and possibly as Residence Assistants during August) and are responsible for planning, promoting, delivering, and evaluating a comprehensive transition program that includes one-on-one and group coaching sessions on various academic and student life-related topics. See JumpStart website for more details.

Peer Academic Coaches

We believe in supporting students to reach their full academic potential. The Peer Academic Coaches are a team of students from different academic years and faculties who provide learning skills support to fellow UBC students. Peer academic coaching focuses on skills such as time management, exam preparation, note-taking, textbook reading, and general study skills. We provide one-on-one support to help students develop strategies for academic success. We also provide referral support to direct students to a variety of services and resources both within the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and across campus.

Peer Wellness Coaches

The Peer Wellness Coaching is a new initiative at UBC to support students’ wellbeing and success, by providing individualized coaching sessions (mostly online) to students who need assistance in various areas of personal wellness and self-management skills, such as stress management, healthy lifestyle, time management, goal setting, relationship building, and work/study/life balance.

SCI Team

SCI Team promotes leadership, academic, and science-related events around UBC. Throughout the year SCI Team organizes different workshops with the help of Student Development to provide educational information to students on a variety of issues.  An example of such events include: Meet your Profs, Get into Research, and Get into Volunteering.

SPAC (Science Peer Academic Coaches)

The Science Peer Academic Coaches are students helping students to discover and achieve their unique academic vision. They support students with one on one private coaching, drop in coaching at Coaches Corner, workshops, and much more!

Sustainability Ambassadors

The Sustainability Ambassadors Peer Program will play a key role in the sustainability education outreach activities of the UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI) Teaching & Learning Office. Volunteer Ambassadors will work with the Manager, Advising and Student Engagement as part of a team to support and facilitate sustainability programming for fellow students on the UBC-Vancouver campus. They will also network with other student groups on campus to promote sustainability education.

Wellness Peers

The Wellness Centre, and the Wellness Peer Program, works alongside Student Health Service and other partners on campus to offer health promotion programs and health education to students.  The Wellness Centre Coordinator works with volunteer Wellness Peers who use a peer-to-peer approach to host wellness fairs, workshops, events, and health campaigns. The Wellness Peers are also trained to offer resources and referrals to students who visit the Centre. Students can visit for any reason and do not require an appointment.
