Who We Are:
Arts Peer Advisors (APA) are a dynamic group of Arts student leaders who help fellow students in the Faculty of Arts navigate through the undergraduate program. One-on-one interactions with APAs occur at the Front Desk of Arts Academic Advising and through email. APAs enhance the student experience by providing timely and accurate informational advising. In addition to regular APA duties, one Peer Advisor works directly with the Aboriginal Student Affairs (ASA) unit within Arts Academic Advising to serve the needs of Arts Aboriginal students and help fulfill the mandate of the university’s Aboriginal Strategic Plan.
What We Do:
- In the spring and over the summer APAs support all newly-admitted students to the Faculty of Arts by helping with the transition to UBC, offering information on degree requirements, course selection and the registration process.
- The ASA Peer assists with November and May graduation for Aboriginal students and closely monitors the admission and registration of newly incoming Aboriginal students to better facilitate targeted communications and timely support throughout Summer Session.
- Year-round APAs provide informational advising through one-on-one interactions with fellow students at the Front Desk of Arts Academic Advising and via e-mail.
- APAs make referrals to other campus resources such as Departmental Advisors and Enrolment Service Professionals.
- The ASA Peer coordinates with the First Nations House of Learning for events like Aboriginal Jump Start and Longhouse Luncheon and other Aboriginal units like the First Nations Studies Program for publications such as the Post. The ASA Peer also participates in generating reports and projects that support Aboriginal Recruitment.
Event Listings:
- In the summer, prior to the registration period, Arts Peer Advisors host live webinars for newly admitted first year students. These webinars are facilitated by an Arts Academic Advisor and go over first year course planning, degree requirements and registration.
- Students can meet an Arts Peer Advisor any weekday between 9am and 4pm at the Front Desk of Arts Academic Advising, Buchanan Building D, room 112.
- Students can e-mail an Arts Peer Advisor at arts.advisor@ubc.ca or arts.aboriginal@ubc.ca.
