Asking Why and Understanding Your Community Better

“Little Jimmy was playing in the alley and hurt his foot. Why was he in the alley in the first place and not in school? Who will take Jimmy to the doctor?” – We will practice asking a series of questions to look beyond the surface of a situation, and get to the underlying systemic factors.

Engaging Indigeneity through place-based, community-based and experiential learning
Where: Sty Wet Ten Hall, First Nations House of Learning
When: Oct 30th, 9:30am to 11:00am

As part of strengthening university-community relations, this workshop focuses on the pedagogical connections between place-based, community-based and experiential learning, and emphasizes Indigenous understandings of these current educational movements. Attendees will hear a story of how a student can come to know Indigenous place by working with community, and then be prompted by a practical exercise to consider their own relationship with the traditional territories on which they live.
Discussion during the session will include the potential for enhancing teaching and learning through connecting curriculum to the places and communities. The overall aim is for attendees to leave with a deepened understanding of the way in which place-based, community-based, and experiential learning can enhance student engagement.

The conference will explore the complexities surrounding development. Stories can illustrate power, privilege, systemic and gender inequalities, the difference between charity and social justice —they also explore the potential for genuine solidarities.

The Learning Community offers you a way to learn from your peers and engage with academic theory to help you make the most of your experience.
The sessions are particularly helpful for students engaged in CBEL, but all are welcome to take part.
